DEREK FILLEY

Exercise Physiologist | Owner

My fitness journey started as recreational weight lifting in my later high school years and was supplemented by sports such as cross country and lacrosse. A deep passion for fitness developed during these years as I transitioned from feeling embarrassed about my body to renewing a newfound sense of confidence, self-esteem and healthy stress management through exercise. This passion resonated throughout my college years, where I started applying what I learned in school to my own training. I used techniques to improve strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and athletic performance while participating in club Team Handball and regular recreational basketball.

Now, much of my own training continues to surround strength and power development, specifically aimed at improving basketball performance (jump height, first step explosiveness, etc.). I also do a lot of recreational road biking, often to and from work as well as around San Diego County. I also enjoy participating in adult recreational lacrosse held at SDSU! And, if you haven't already assumed, I regularly participate in recreational basketball around San Diego as well! In total, my training age (cumulative time engaging in regular exercise) is about 10 years or a little over a third of my life!

"In order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline...and effort."

EDUCATION

I achieved a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from The Ohio State University with the Suma Cum Laude distinction. Here I learned and started to apply the basic principles of exercise physiology, human nutrition, behavior change theory, and body composition testing to both general populations – youth through older adults - as well as those with chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, Lupus, Parkinson’s, various heart and lung conditions, obesity, and others.

Being a research based institution, The Ohio State University provided me with the opportunity to assist with research in the exercise physiology lab. I helped here with various academic studies surrounding sleep deprivation and performance, supplements and performance, diet and exercise for managing osteoarthritis, strength testing, women’s progressive resistance training, body composition testing and more.

I continue to place a large emphasis on continuing education outside of the academic setting. Following college, I have invested time and money into the following continuing education:

  • SDCCD Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program.
  • SDCCD Acute Care Nursing Assistant Training Program.

  • The Edge University (theedgeu.com) sports performance educational platform. Member from 2020-2022. Many hours spent here continuing to learn on my own time.

  • The Pinnacle Performance Biomechanics Program. Completed May 2021-July 2021.

  • Many unlogged hours spent reading scientific literature related to exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, nervous system function, post-injury rehabilitation and more!

GROUP & PERSONAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE

I arrived in San Diego late 2018, which is when I acquired my first job here as a personal trainer. My intentions were to work part-time as a personal trainer while pursuing further experience in the healthcare field. Within my first year living is San Diego, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and worked as a nursing assistant in the long-term acute care setting while also continuing my personal training work part-time. After a few months working as a CNA, I realized that I was enjoying the personal training days much more than the CNA days and decided to pursue personal training as a full-time job. As a result, Filley Fit Personal Training was established in March of 2020! Since then, I have worked diligently to build my business and reputation. From the time I started my business, I have worked with over 40 different individuals, couples and small groups of various ages, genders, physical backgrounds and desired outcomes.

I still work with a number of my first clients to this day! I have helped clients with the following:

  • Strength & Muscle Mass Accumulation

  • Power development/maintenance (very important for all ages!)

  • Core strength and mobility

  • Cardiorespiratory performance

  • Balance, coordination and agility

  • Sports performance (vertical jump, sprint/acceleration speed, deceleration, reactivity, sport-specific skill development, etc.)

  • Acute and chronic injury management (ankles, plantar fasciitis, back issues, knee problems, shoulder issues, cramping, and others)

  • Nutrition consultation/education and programming

  • Weight management consultation (loss, gain or maintenance)

In the Community

Starting in Spring 2022, I volunteer 3-4 hours a week to help coach the boys high school lacrosse team at Preuss School. The Preuss School UC San Diego is a unique charter middle and high school for low-income scholars who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college. Located on the UC San Diego campus, nearly 100% of graduates of The Preuss School go on to higher education. It is my goal to help build this lacrosse program to be a respectable, competitive program within the San Diego City Conference while instilling the practical qualities of team work, individual effort, growth mindset and perseverance in each of the boys I get the chance to work with through this volunteering opportunity.
