Getting Stronger in Your 50s!

Hey Everyone! Wanted to share a couple tips on improving strength as you age. One of the biggest mistakes many make when trying to improve or maintain strength is not taking time to work on nervous system qualities and power development.

Before I lose you with the jargon, this is not a very difficult thing to do. Take a quick look at the video below!.

Here I have TC preforming a very simple pin chest press. We emphasize exploding up through the bar as quickly as possible. Though this weight is not heavy (for him), the emphasis on speed allows him to...

1) send a large amount of "neural drive" to the tissues used in this movement.

This permits certain muscle fibers reserved for higher force/speed situations to actually be recruited and trained in the movement while...

2) forcing his nervous system to RAPIDLY organize/synchronize the engagement and disengagement of various tissues needed to move the bar fast.

That's a lot for the ol' bean to coordinate in half a second, but that's the point!

There are days when TC and I focus on moving heavier weight, but this does not need to happen all the time to continue building qualities necessary for strength at any age. These concepts can be applied to any exercise to aid in strength development. TC and I hope you find this video and info both educational and motivating to help continue building strength into your 50s and beyond 🚀 Have a great day everyone!
